Description / Access Information
Ketchum to Smiley Creek Road Ride: The route from Ketchum to Smiley Creek on Highway 75 is one of the most popular bike rides in the area. The scenery is lovely with incredible views of the Boulder, Smoky, Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountains. The ride goes by historic Galena Lodge, near to the bottom of the south side of Galena pass. The entire route is over 3000 feet of elevation gain but can also be divided into many more manageable smaller sections.The ride starts in downtown Ketchum and heads due north. After roughly 10 miles riders will pass the Sawtooth National Recreation Headquarters, marking their official entry into this beautiful Forest Service managed area. Phantom Hill looms ahead as riders pass many side-drainages that offer two-track road and gravel road options for those looking to mix things up.
Riders can stop off at Galena Lodge for a rest or wonderful lunch before they start the climb up Galena Pass. Then, you will soon be shifting into your low gear as you get into the meat of the climb to the pass. Stunning views will help take you mind off of your suffering legs.
The actual pass/summit isn't particularly known as a stopping point for great views, but it is a great spot to reach none the less. What a place. In the winter this is a popular jumping off point for backcountry skiing and splitboarding adventures.
On the north side, just down off of the summit, is the Sawtooth viewing area on the left (as you are descending). There you will find fine views of the Sawtooth Mountains and the south end of the Sawtooth Basin. Continuing your descent into the Sawtooth Valley, the welcoming Smiley Creek Lodge is a ways further down. Well worth a visit if you would like a burger and fries, a milkshake, and a big cookie for your jersey pocket.
Time to ride back to Ketchum. Hitchhiking may work. You can try holding up your front wheel, like you have a mechanical.
