The Democrat Road starts with approximately 2.5 miles of mellow grades. Then, at a fork in the road, the route steepens significantly. (Stay right at the first fork to stay on the main Democrat Gulch Road.) At the second fork, a left leads to the Democrat Mine, a right leads to a broad ridge at the head of the canyon.
Directions: From the stop light intersection of Main Street/Hwy. 75 and Bullion Street in Hailey head west on Bullion Street/Croy Creek Road. In 1.8 miles arrive at Democrat Gulch Road on the right/north.
Mountain Biking South Valley Dirt Roads: Prior to the construction of the BLM Croy Trail Network in 2009, south valley mountain bikers had a few singletrack options, but they did a lot of pedaling up and down the area's many mining roads. The roads follow a pattern of starting with gentle grades and steepening rapidly into very challenging routes. They provide long and steep climbs and they often pass through old mining areas and other interesting sights. If you are riding a bike, consider carrying hiking shoes in a small day-pack to access some great off-trail ridge line hikes.
