STANDALONE TRAIL MAP
GENERAL COMMENTS: August 15

This last week lived up to August’s reputation of being hot and dry on the trails. Drink lots of H2O, bring extra for your furry friends, and enjoy the heat before we start moving into fall.

BCRD will be back out on the Wood River Trail next week painting more safety markings on the path between Fox Acres and Ohio Gulch. Please keep an eye out for the work crew, slow down, and say hi.

A safely reminder for our bikers and moto riders, trails are very dry, especially in our south valley. This is the time to slow down and use caution. Last week a user has reported the need for extra caution on sections of the Croy trail system, notable on the downhill portion of Bull Dog towards Bullion Rd. on the switch backs. When in doubt slow down and keep the rubber side down!

The South Idaho Interagency Dispatch Center announced Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect as of today. Blaine County Sheriff reports restrictions apply to all lands north of U.S. Route 20 from Hill City east to the Craters of the Moon National Monument Park Visitor Center to the northernmost Sawtooth National Forest boundary, as described within the respective agencies' Stage 1 Fire Restriction orders. South of U.S. Route 20, restrictions will only apply to National Forest System lands within the boundaries of the Minidoka Ranger District of the Sawtooth National Forest. For more information see the map and links below.

Bald Mountain has trail closures due to trail building and logging work. Closed trails include River Run Trail, Pale Rider, Traverse Trail access to River Run, French Connection access to River Run, and Mindbender below Roundhouse. Sun Valley Company reports that conditions may change and please obey all posted signs. Check the Sun Valley app or Sun Valley Company's website for more lift and trail information.

BLM recently performed trail maintenance on Slaughterhouse’s Belle South and Vue 1.0 trails. This included cutting back plants encroaching on the trail. This is an occasional piece of preventative maintenance that helps keep our trails in good shape and usable for years to come.

Any trail labeled as partially open (yellow), is available for use if and when conditions allow. Though these trails may not have been cleared of deadfall yet, so plan on possibly needing to navigate over down trees.
July 16th the Forest Service reported sheep moving throughout the valley and on grazing allotments. Click "more details" below for a more detailed sheep report.

Wildlife is present. For information on recommended best practices when wildlife or sheep are encountered, visit this site's Trail Alerts Section.

As you head out for your trail adventures, feel free to report anything you see that you think should be shared. Email me, the BCRD Trails Coordinator, Ashley Knox at aknox@brcd.org.

Stay safe and enjoy our trails!
Sheep-
Sheep are in the valley. Check summertrailink.org for current reported sheep locations. Keep in mind land managers do their best to provide accurate sheep locations, however, consider these locations and dates as a suggestion of where the sheep will be. Always stay aware of your surroundings.

August 13, Forest Service reports:
• A band is near Placer Creek. They will truck off the allotment on 08/15 using the Placer Creek Corrals.
• A band is on top between Kinsey Creek and Wolftone Creek.
• A band is on top of Warfield.
• A band is near the Newman Creek Corrals. A second band is trailing along Baker Creek to the Newman Corrals to be combined and shipped 08/17/2025. These bands will then split, and half will head north while half heads east.
• A band is above the corral along Lake Creek Road.
• A band is between Milligan Gulch and Hyndman Creek, headed towards Bear Gulch.
• A band is at the top near Pioneer Cabin.
• A band is near Fisher Canyon headed east towards Porcupine.

Let's not forget our manners and trail etiquette no matter where we are or how we recreate. A quick reminder- bikers yield to hikers, and hikers and bikers yield to horses, then downhill yields to uphill. If in doubt, just yield to each other and meet someone new while you talk about how lucky we are to be in such an amazing place. Bottom line is to be kind to each other and enjoy being out on the trails.

Continue to look to this site for up-to-date trail info. Please be aware of changing conditions and considerate of trail conditions when you head out for your adventures.

If you have questions, comments, concerns, or reports about the trails please email BCRD Trail Coordinator Ashley Knox (aknox@bcrd.org), or phone (208) 578-2273. For area land management agency contact info, go to the Trail Alerts section of this site.
